INDIA’S FAVORITE: MASALA CHAI
Author: Camila Santamaria
Before I went to India I knew it was a country famous for its tea. After spending 3 months in that crazy country I left with a lot of new knowledge about indian food that you will soon see in CHAKULA.
In this opportunity I’ll start with something really easy. Is a beverage you can find in every corner of this huge and amazing country.
Chai is what indians call to the tea with milk. Masala in the other hand is the word indians use for “a mix of spices” and they use it for every type of recipe: curry, rice, omelette, bread, etc. You can buy masala powder in any market and shop in India, but you can also make it yourself. So Masala Chai es basically milk tea with spices.
Ingredients
– 1.5 cup of milk (Indians usually use buffalo milk that is creamier than cow milk and mix it with water, so you can just use whole cow milk)
– 1 teaspoon of black tea (try to use tea that comes in leafs, not powder)
– 3 cinnamon sticks
– 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger
– 2 capsules of green cardamom
– 2 cloves
– Sugar as you like
Step by Step
– First, prepare your spices: break the cinnamon sticks into small pieces, chop the fresh ginger and open de cardamom seeds.
– Put everything in a pot with milk and tea and let it boil for 2 minutes.
– The tea should rise a couple of times, this way it gets creamier.
– Strain the tea into the cups and enjoy!!
Me in India
Masala Chai is definitely India’s favorite tea. Even if its 40º locals will enjoy a small and tasty cup of it, so why shouldn’t you?
